Do you know why credit unions were first created?
The idea was pretty simple: have people with a common interest (typically folks working for the same employer) join together to loan each other money. It wasn’t to make money, but simply to help each other out in times of need.
This desire to help people in the community is still at the foundation of our beliefs. From fun and fitness to educational and serious, the credit union strives to impact members in the community in a positive way.
We help by providing both man power and financial resources to a wide variety of events and causes. In fact, in 2013 the credit union donated more than $40,000 to nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations that provide food, shelter, counseling, and other miscellaneous needs to people in our community. In addition, our staff members have donated hundreds of hours of their time to a number of different groups.
Here are a few of our upcoming events that we are participating in:
• Impact Saginaw, “CU at the Zoo” – Enjoy FREE ADMISSION to the Saginaw Children’s Zoo on Saturday, August 16, 2014 from 10am – 4pm. This is sponsored by Saginaw Area Credit Unions, including Catholic Federal. Impact Saginaw is your local credit union’s working together to help support positive events in the city of Saginaw.
• Run for your Heart Pulse 3 Foundation & YMCA of Saginaw Community Race. We are proud to be a sponsor again for this event and help fight the #1 killer in our region – heart disease! The race will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2014.
• Great (Lakes Bay) Moms 3rd Annual Block Party – We are proud to sponsor this free family event on Saturday, September 13, 2014 from 10am – 3pm in Wenonah Park, Bay City.
And this year, for the very first time, we are very proud to have won an All Area Arts Award, an award that “recognizes individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the quality of life in Saginaw County through their commitment to the arts.” For years the credit union has championed the arts through our volunteer work, outreach programs and charitable contributions to events such as Jazz on Jefferson, Saginaw By Symphony Orchestra, Temple Theatre and many others.
While awards are always nice, it’s the personal contributions we make - helping moms, families and seniors - that reaffirm our long-held tradition of people helping people. Help that’s due in large part to our wonderful, dedicated staff and members who give so generously of their time and hearts.
Interested in getting involved? Check out our or for upcoming activities. Please join us at our next event - volunteers are always needed. Remember, being involved strengthens our community and creates a fun, social atmosphere for everyone who volunteers while at the same time, helping those who need it most.
